01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Akichi Cafe occupies a corner of a nostalgic-feeling plaza, where old drainage pipes make an unusual feature and visitors can spend time outdoors at their own pace. The terrace, lined with parasols and seating, draws people stopping by for a casual drink or snack while out for a walk.
For something sweet, try a croffle: croissant dough baked until crisp and golden. It comes plain or with chocolate or caramel sauce, making it a welcome treat in the afternoon. Ice cream sandwiches are also on offer, along with lighter savoury options such as nikuman (steamed meat buns), gyoza and snack waffles.
There is plenty to choose from at the drinks counter, too, from draft beer, highballs and sours enjoyed beneath the open sky to hot chai, drip coffee and colourful melon soda floats. Whether you settle in alone for a leisurely afternoon tea or raise a glass at dusk, the setting lends itself to Shimokitazawa’s laid-back pace.
